Mid-February Nourishment

Mid-February on the farm often comes with a slump. The big holidays are long gone, spring still feels far away, and the days blur together without much change. There’s no planting yet, no new life to break up the routine - just feeding, checking, and waiting. It's the kind of tired that comes from cold mornings, frozen ground, and doing the same things day after day.
In this slump, we are asked to slow down and nourish ourselves in other ways. Here on the farm, we've developed some cozy ways to help us through:
1. Scented Rituals: Making Incense
There’s something meditative about watching smoke curl and rise, carrying a custom scent you created. Making your own incense is both a craft and a ritual. We decided to go for a blend of joss, sandalwood, marshmallow, sage, and clove for grounding and warmth. You can shape them into cones, sticks, or even small bundles to burn on cozy evenings. Lighting incense while journaling, reading, or sipping tea creates a moment of pause - an act of self-care that engages your senses and reclaims your energy.
2. Creative Comforts: Mid-Winter Crafts
Here at the farm, crafts made from dried and natural materials are a favorite. Crafting isn’t about perfection - it’s about slowing down, letting your hands move, and giving yourself space to be present. Each piece becomes a small reminder that you’ve cared for yourself in a tangible way.
3. Nourishing Meals: Warm, Simple, and Heartfelt
Food in mid-February should feel cozy, grounding, and comforting. Like slow-cooked stews, roasted vegetables, creamy soups, and teas. We enjoy making warm, almond flour chocolate chip cookies, or a beet and apple smoothie served hot. Meals become more than sustenance - they become a chance to honor your body and slow your pace. Bonus: involve your senses fully, savoring aromas, textures, and the warmth of each bite.
4. Combining All Three: A Mid-February Evening Practice
Imagine an evening where you’ve simmered a fragrant soup, lit your homemade incense, and have a small craft project ready at hand. You can eat slowly, letting the flavors comfort you, while the smell of incense smoke fills your space. Later, you can return to your craft, letting your mind wander. These small acts come together, creating a sense of safety, and of gentle nourishment for both body and soul.
Mid-February asks us to find comfort in small, intentional acts. Incense, crafts, and simple meals aren’t just hobbies - they’re ways to honor yourself, to acknowledge that even in this quiet, gray stretch of winter, you deserve warmth, beauty, and care.
